Latest news from August 2011

2011 is the International Year of Forests!

New guide for local communities produced by Natural England

Natural England has produced a simple guide to show communities how they can make improvements for biodiversity and the environment in their local area. The guide can be downloaded by clicking here. They have also created a series of maps for each Community Area in Wiltshire so that local people can quickly and easily see what environmental assets they have in their local area. These maps show Local Nature Reserves, County Wildlife Sites and other areas of importance for nature conservation, as well as land that is under the agri-environment schemes. The maps can be viewed on the Wiltshire Intelligence Network website.

Help us reach 1 million records by 2012!

The Wiltshire and Swindon Biological Record Centre (WSBRC) has set a challenge of achieving one million species records held on its database for the county by April 2012. The target was set to encourage existing recorders to submit their records and to inspire new recorders to have a go at investigating the natural world around them and sharing what they've seen.

As of the beginning of August 2011 the database held over 925,000 records in total so there's still some way to go to reach this ambitious target.

You can help the WSBRC reach their target by sending in your sightings, either to the WSBRC or via the relevant local recording group or County Recorder. All wildlife records are valuable whether they are of common species or a county or UK BAP species.

Find out how to get involved in recording from sending the WSBRC sightings from your back garden to taking part in our International Year of Forests surveys or taking part in a monitoring project or scheme.

Biodiversity Assistants

Our two Biodiversity Assistants, Andy and Tarot have completed their six month placement and have now left the Wildlife Trust. Our newest member, Rebecca has taken over from them and has also been working alongside the Biological Record Centre and completing data entry.

The 2010 Wiltshire BAP Forum Event

This year’s Wiltshire BAP Forum event was held on 18th November in Devizes Town Hall. There was an excellent turnout with around 90 people attending altogether. The morning part of the event included talks on the changing political climate, where biodiversity sits within the wider Wiltshire context, and the way forward for the Wiltshire BAP. Go to the Latest News section of this website to read more and download the presentations and proceedings from the event.

More Cracking Wildflowers

Chalk grassland restoration plans are making great progress in Wiltshire with chalk wildflowers nodding in every direction at RSPB’s Winterbourne Down reserve. A further 26 ha of arable fields were sown with a chalk grassland and wildflower mix this autumn. This brings the total to 132 ha of arable land being reverted to chalk grassland at this site, which will provide a colourful panorama of new wildlife rich downland.
