West Wiltshire Batscapes Project
The Bats SAP in the Wiltshire BAP 2002 only covered six species of bat. However, a decision was made by the Bats Working Group that as part of the review of this SAP, the Action Plan should now cover all bats found in Wiltshire, which currently amounts to 15 species. If other species are found in the county in future, then they, along with the others in the list will be covered by the targets and actions which comprise this Action Plan.
All bats and their roosts are protected under Schedule 2 of the Habitats Regulations (1994) and Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981) (as amended).
This new project was set up to find out more about the bats living in West Wiltshire, and to conserve the habitat of these important and mysterious mammals. The Batscapes Project will get local people involved in recording the bats in their neighbourhood, and a series of workshops, walks and talks will take place over the next year. The Project will also aim to work with landowners to help improve habitat for bats in the area by new planting and by management of existing hedges and woodlands to provide better foraging and commuting routes for the bats.
This area was chosen specifically because it is known to be internationally important for bats, particularly the rare greater and lesser horseshoe and Bechstein’s bats. We are currently applying for funding to help support the project. The project was set up by the Wiltshire BAP Bats Working Group, to take forward the West Wiltshire Biodiversity priority area. The project partners include: Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG), Wiltshire and Swidnon Biological Records Centre, Natural England, Wiltshire Council, Johns Associates and the Cotswold Water Park Society.
