Rivers and streams

Rivers and streams are flowing water courses and in their natural state they are dynamic systems, continually modifying their forms. In many cases their ability to function naturally and create new habitat has been reduced as a result of historical management, flood protection schemes and impoundments, sometimes over many centuries. Most of Wiltshire’s rivers especially the chalk streams have been managed for a variety of reasons over many centuries.

They are intensively used to convey flood waters and discharges, to provide water for public, agricultural and industrial use, and are a popular recreational resource. Rivers and their associated habitats provide important wildlife corridors, linking fragments of semi natural habitat in intensively farmed or built up areas and facilitating the movement of species. Given the value of these systems to us and the complexity of issues affecting them, coordinated action is vital to ensure that their wildlife value is conserved and enhanced.
